That Little Thing Called (PARTIAL) Success!

Two poems down, three to go! Until I get that third one in, I've been refining the first two while listening to this song:

Neither of which have anything to do with this song, but, every once in awhile, music works for me. Most of the time I have a hard time concentrating on what I'm writing if I'm listening to something, but, currently, Adam is watching snowboarding on tv, so I had to plug in my headphones and distract myself from that annoying announcer's voice.

Anyway, I've finished my annotations, so my February packet is only waiting on this last poem, which--you know, no hurry, muse--I need to send off by this week to reach Blas on time. I'm really excited about these two poems so far though. I'm hoping I'm not fooling myself, and they're total crap, but if they do well once Blas is done with them, I might submit one or two (maybe all three, but we don't know about that one yet!) to a contest or two. It seems most everyone else has had something published.

My only publication was a short story and a poem into the Grassroots Undergraduate Literary Magazine, both of which are horribly embarrassing, and I never want to revisit them. Ever, ever again. Which is why my copy is currently collecting a lot of dust on my shelf, but I know a lot more now than I did then, so I think that's a pretty good excuse, right? I also now know how to use the material I have. I used to spend too long concentrating on writing the exact story. I've learned the valuable skill of stretching the truth to benefit my story now.

You know, one day you just might read My Uncle Sings La Cucaracha and Echoes of Bovary in a book or magazine, and, for my sake, I hope not very many of you recognize the characters modeled after the real life people. You guys just make awesome subject material for someone that has a lot of time to sit around and observe.

Anyway, the purpose of this blog post was just a sort of sigh of relief on my part that I'm starting to get the hang of being an MFA student. And to think I was starting to wonder if I'd ever get in anywhere. Now, here I am.

So, to wrap this up, one more song that I've been listening/writing to lately:
